Courage

Her needles clacked
as her fabric grew
from the yarn so delicately
knitted into pretty patterns

She told me the windows are open
the doors are open
the washing is on the line

though wind whistles
into the cottage of her life
we can climb outside
or walk through the portals

Smelling the sweet ambrosia
of hyacinth at the porch edge
we only need to take a step
and we can approach the new world

As needles clacked
cat snuggled on the chair besides
she told me the rug is only soft under your feet
if you take off your shoes

Even though it rains
with black clouds, thunder, lightning
the sun will always return
bathing the flowers with life

A beautiful rose bush
soon cut down to its base
left cold and abandoned
can grow back
new arms to reach to the sky
pulling itself out from below

The rose shows its face
now bathed in light
its petals pirouette in the breeze

Her needles clacked
focused on her work
but still attentive

She told me the windows are open
the doors are open
the washing is on the line

I believed her

I began to see the faces
in the folds of her knitting
She joined in giving courage

So, removing my shoes
I felt the floor under my feet
I climbed out the window
and stepped off the porch
